Columbus, Ohio

In honor of the International Year of Astronomy and the 400th Anniversary of Galileo's discoveries with the telescope, The Ohio State University Department of Astronomy is pleased to invite you to attend a public star party on Saturday, April 4th from 8-10pm on the roof of Smith Laboratory. Come view the Moon and Saturn through our 12-inch and 8-inch telescopes, learn about the constellations, and enjoy the night sky, weather permitting. The star party is being held in conjunction with IYA2009's Global Star Party as part of their 100 Hours of Astronomy cornerstone program.

Professors and graduate students from the Astronomy Department will be on hand to discuss the celestial sights on view and answer questions.

This event is free and open to the public.

Because of steep stairs and cramped spaces in the observatory, this program is not suitable for children under the age of 5. Children over the age of 5 are welcome provided they are accompanied and supervised by an adult.

Venue

The OSU IYA2009 Star Party will be held in
Smith Laboratory
5th Floor Planetarium
174 W. 18th Avenue
OSU Main Campus, Columbus OH
The program will run from 8-10pm EDT. Visitor parking is available in the Tuttle Park Place parking garage. Most of the OSU campus is a pedestrian zone so there is little or no parking next to Smith Laboratory.

Accessibility

While the Smith Laboratory Planetarium is accessible by elevator, we apologize that the observatory floor is only accessible by multiple flights of steep stairs (Smith Lab is an old, pre-ADA building slated for future renovation).

Bad Weather

In the event of bad weather, we will cancel the observing program. In general, if you can't seen the Moon at 8pm, we probably won't be observing with the telescopes.
