ASTRONOMY 292 ANNOUNCEMENTS: WINTER 2012


One announcements:

Our final exam will be on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the usual room (McPherson 1008). Up to two pages (8.5x11 inches, each two-sided) of self-prepared notes, a calculator and the sheet with the constants are allowed. There will be two parts to the exam, with Part A consisting of six longer problems, of the kind we had on the midterms, and Part B consisting of 24 short questions. The entire material covered in the class is fair game, but with the most recent material (quasars, cosmology) somewhat emphasized in part A.

Our second midterm will be on Friday, February 24, 2012, in the class. One page (two-sided) of self-prepared notes, a calculator and the sheet with the constants are allowed. Roughly speaking, Chapters 16, 17.1, 19, 20 and 21 are fair game.

Two announcements:

The third homework, due Friday, 10 February in class: problems 16.1, 16.2, 16.4, 16.6, 16.7, 16.9, 18.1.

A "paper about a paper" assignment is due Friday, March 2nd, 2012. Using ADS, select an interesting, refereed astronomical paper published since 1970, and in no more than 3 pages (single spaced) describe what is in that paper. Consult with me on your paper selection by no later than Friday, February 17th, 2012.

Two announcements:

In observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, university offices will be closed and there will be no classes on Monday (1/16). Regular hours resume on Tuesday (1/17).

The second homework, due Monday 23 January in class: problems 14.1, 14.2, 14.3, 14.6, 15.3, 15.5, 15.7. Problem 15.10 can be done as extra credit.

Standing assignment for the A292 students: prepare 3-4 minutes presentation on the current Astronomy Picture of the Day, presenter's name will be randomly drawn each day.
