Volatile storage and cycling in the Earth's Interior

The distribution and cycling of volatile elements such and H and C in planetary interiors have dramatic effects on our understanding of the dynamic processes of the Earth. With bearing on the contrasts in fate between Earth, Mars, and Venus, the presence of hydrogen and carbon locked in the Earth's interior controls the formation of deep melting, the deformation and convection of the Earth's mantle responsible for plate tectonics, as well as hints to the conditions under which the Earth formed and the origin of the planet's water. The talk will discuss a combined approach drawing upon high-pressure, high-temperature laboratory experiments and ab-initio calculations.
