Piecing together the influence of tides in exoplanet systems

Planetary and stellar tides clearly play an important role in the evolution of observed exoplanet systems. However, estimates for the strength and specific influence of tides vary wildy amongst different authors. I will describe an attempt to empirically calibrate one of the simpler formalisms, equilibrium tide theory, to provide a consistent description of all the observations. I will also discuss what this might be able to tell us about the origins of short period giant planets.
