Nuclear bars and nuclear spirals in nearby normal and active galaxies

Martini, P., Mulchaey, J.S., Pogge, R.W., & Regan, M.W. 2001, BAAS, 198, 85.03

Hubble Space Telescope observations of the circumnuclear regions of nearby normal and active galaxies have revealed a wealth of small-scale structure, particularly nuclear bars and nuclear spirals. We present high angular-resolution WFPC2 and NICMOS images of a large sample of nearby active and inactive galaxies. These images permit us to quantify the frequency of nuclear bars and nuclear spiral structure in these galaxies as a function of galaxy type and AGN activity. We will discuss the implications for the AGN fueling process.
