ASTRONOMY 292 ANNOUNCEMENTS
Second Midterm Rescheduled
Several students in Astron 292 are also taking Physics 262, which is having a large
midterm on Friday, 15 February. Out of consideration for these students, we are
rescheduling the Astron 292 midterm to Monday, 18 February, at the regular time, in the
regular classroom.
The second midterm will cover the material in Chapters 16 through 18 of
Basic Astrophysics. This change is reflected in the syllabus on
the website.

Recitations
The recitation on 14 February will remain as scheduled, even though the exam has been
moved.
However, the recitation scheduled for Wednesday, 20 February, has been moved to
Thursday, 21 February, as Dr. Peterson will be serving as a panelist on Thursday morning
at the
NASA Future Forum
at COSI. We apologize for any inconvenience.
These changes are reflected in the syllabus on the website.

Dr. Peterson will be out of town on Monday and Tuesday, 11-12 February at a Space
Telescope Institute Council meeting in Baltimore. Dr. Ryden will lecture in his absence.
Dr. Peterson will also be out of town on Monday and Tuesday 25-26 February at a
meeting of the AURA Board in College Park, Maryland. Dr. Martini will lecture in his
absence.

Extra Credit
As Drs. Ryden and Peterson are still working on their textbook Basic Astrophysics, we
are happy to have students help identify errors, misstatements, and inconsistencies. For
each substantive error reported, students will receive 2 points towards their homework
total to a maximum of 100 points (i.e., 50 errors/person). Errors must be substantive
errors or inconsistencies: stylistic corrections (like locations of quotation marks, use of
semicolons, etc.) will not count.
Each week I will attempt to make a list of errors already caught and post it on the class
website. Once posted on the website, errors are no longer eligible for extra credit.

Make-Up Lecture
For those who were in Naw'lins last week
for our apparently now-annual debacle
on a national stage, or for anyone else
who wants to hear it again, there will
be a make-up lecture on Monday, 14 January,
3:30-5:00 in 4054 McPherson.
Topics to be covered: binary stars, stellar masses,
multiband photometry, stellar temperatures,
and bolometric corrections.
