========== Observers: ========== Peter Garnavich (ND), Matthias Dietrich (OSU), Rachael Beaton (UVa), Katherine Rueff (ND) Observing Assistent: Wayne Wack Support Astronomer: Olga Kuhn Instrumentation: Doug Officer ========== Instrument: ========== LUCIFER/ LBC ============= Quick Summary ============= Observing most recently WISE discovered brown dwarf for Mike Skrutskie (UVa). Object: w0458 Ra: 04:58:54 Dec: +64:34:53 ============== Detailed Notes: ============== UTC 01:40 -- taking LBC Red side flats for data taken previous evening while waiting for the sun to set. UTC 01:51 -- started Bessel V flats UTC 01:54 -- V flats completed, started Bessel R flats UTC 02:01 -- R flats completed, started Bessel I flats UTC 02:05 -- I flats completed, started Sloan z flats UTC 02:10 -- z flats completed, noticed that flats are not dithering for some reason, reason unknown at this point. UTC 02:12 -- Switching to LUCIFER to establish pointing, having issues with engaging LUCIFER; problem setting time with LUCI. UTC 02:44 -- Slewing to HD33651 telluric standard UTC 02:51 -- On the target field and calculating and tweaking the IE, Ca values; looks properly positioned UTC 02:58 -- Moving the slit into positiong, seeing is at 0.8 arcsec UTC 03:10 -- telescope is having trouble moving to offset of 1.1 arcsec to get target in slit- problems communicating with telescope UTC 03:15 -- Restarting server system, calling for software support. UTC 03:42 -- Running script to get position of the target telluric star UTC 03:45 -- Putting in mask to take test image of star. UTC 03:48 -- Moving telescope into telluric position, spectrum initialized UTC 03:55 -- Telluric HD33615 spectrum started, 10sec X 4 exp, possibly saturated, rerun script. UTC 03:58 -- Restarted telluric exp with 3sec x 4 exp. UTC 04:00 -- Slewing to guide star for target w045. UTC 04:09 -- Target visually confirmed, very faint; putting in mask to move object into slit. UTC 04:13 -- Taking 2 test images to confirm target is in slit; target successfully aligned in slit UTC 04:18 -- Staring target exposure: 300 sec x 4 exp, seeing at ~ 0.9 arcsec UTC 04:42 -- All exposures completed, target spectra successfully aquired. UTC 04:42 -- Checking the target position on slit and then doing another set of spectra UTC 04:50 -- Starting 2nd set; Seeing is degrading & humidity is rising. (high airmass) UTC 05:11 -- Do Flat Field UTC 05:18 -- Start tell1 UTC 05:30 -- finished; ================== ================== Switch back to LBC ================== ================== UTC 06:15 -- Setting up LBCs UTC 06:30 -- Waiting for Focus to converge. High winds. UTC 06:50 -- Ready! ============== OSUmonitor/M82 ============== UTC 06:52 -- Move to M82 & Focus UTC 07:01 -- Start M82 Red Arm: 1.0" Blue Arm: 1.2" UTC 07:12 -- Finished ================== OSUmonitor/NGC3627 ================== UTC 07:12 -- Move to NGC3627 & Focus UTC 07:22 -- Start NGC3627 OB Red Arm: 1.4" Blue Arm: 1.4" Looks like a jump in the first set of exposures; Inflated the Seeing measurement Seems like there is a weird problem on the centering of the frame. UTC 07:35 -- Even worse in the 2nd set of images. Halting OB. UTC 07:39 -- 4 seconds of Right Ascention; still high winds; UTC 07:42 -- Restart the OB; UTC 07:50 -- Telescope is slightly out of balance, plus high winds are causing the image problems. Will need to close the dome and try to reset the balance. :-( |-: UTC 08:22 -- Fixed enough to observe. Still some things that need to be done to fully fix the problem UTC 08:27 -- Start the NGC3627 OB; UTC 08:30 -- Position of the telescope is oscillating by as much as 20" Need to find object away from the wind and in the East =============== ND_PG1407c_whim =============== UTC 08:37 -- Slew to location of pg1407c; this puts the wind hitting the side of the dome UTC 08:48 -- Try the field. See if the wind clears. First set of frames -- blue shutter seems to be stuck Red Arm seeing ~1.0" though focus seems soft on many images UTC 09:01 -- Second set of images came more quickly than anticipated. Red Arm is fine with <1.0" seeing. Blue shutter is still stuck Stopped OB. UTC 09:36 -- Blue Shutter was stuck half open. Olga power cycled the cameras and got it to work again. UTC 09:37 -- Focusing on the pg1407c field; UTC 09:43 -- Re-Start script; Both cameras are open! UTC 10:15 -- Finished ================== OSUmonitor/ngc5474 ================== UTC 10:15 -- Slew to ngc5474 UTC 10:28 -- Start OB for NGC5474 focus seems soft on blue, seeing 1.5" red 1.3" UTC 11:03 -- Finished; Seeing is degrading. ================== OSUmonitor/ngc5194 ================== UTC 11:04 -- Slew to ngc5194 & start focus UTC 11:12 -- Start ngc5194 OB Red Arm: ~1.1" Blue Arm: ~1.4" UTC 11:30 -- Red Seems to be out of focus UTC 11:33 -- Re-focus; UTC 11:44 -- Test image (5s); Focus is better, seeing <1.0" UTC 11:46 -- Restart ngc5194; Red arm: ~1.1" Blue Arm: ~1.3" UTC 11:53 -- Attempt to maunally offset focus between exposures UTC 12:06 -- Red Focus is still drifting - despite manual focus adjustement. UTC 12:23 -- Finished =============== OSUmonitor/m101 =============== UTC 12:24 -- Slew to m101, focus; Observations will go into twilight UTC 12:34 -- Start OB for m101 UTC 12:40 -- Stopped after 1 cycle due to increasing sky brightness. ====== CALIBS ====== UTC 12:44 -- Start sky flats - r' z' UTC 12:49 -- Start sky flats - V I UTC 12:56 -- Start sky flats - B R UTC 12:59 -- Start sky flats - B R UTC 01:02 -- Start sky flats - U_SDT V Humidity is rising.
