Isla Choros Penguin Reserve
March 1999

These photos were taken by Bob Blum during a trip to the Isla Choros, which is one of the largest reserves of the Humboldt Penguin on the Chilean coast just north of La Serena. Isla Choros is reached by boat, in this case small, colorfully painted fishing boats expertly handled by local fishermen. People are prohibited from landing on the Isla Choros, but we did land on the nearby Isla Damas, where there is overnight camping, and a number of comorant and sea-bird nests.

For whatever reason, none of the penguin pictures came out (we didn't get that close due to high surf that day). We did get to see (and smell) a number of sea lions, though. Everyone had a good time, though the sea lions were a bit much for Megan Blum. "All done boats" was her summary of the day after we got back to shore.
