OSU College of Arts and Sciences Department of Astronomy

The Astronomy Minor at Ohio State

Required courses

The minor in astronomy consists of 20 to 23 credit hours of course work.

Required courses are Astronomy 291, 292, and 350. These total 15 hours.

Elective courses

These electives make up 5 to 8 credit hours:

Astronomy 681 (5)
Astronomy 682 (5)
Physics 261 (4) and Physics 262 (4)

Other considerations

A student majoring in physics, where Physics 261 and 262 are required in the major program, cannot use these physics courses in the astronomy minor program. For these students, the minor program would be Astronomy 291, 292, 350, and either Astronomy 681 or 682.

For students whose major program does not include Physics 261 and 262, the likely astronomy minor would be Astronomy 291, 292, 350, and Physics 261 and 262. Prerequisites for these courses are Mathematics 151, 152, 153, and 254; and Physics 131, 132, and 133.

Astronomy minors are also encouraged to take Astronomy 295 (Undergraduate Seminar). This one credit course largely consists of lectures on contemporary research topics by various members of the Astronomy Department faculty and is graded pass/fail.

If you complete the minor following these guidelines, you should file a Minor Program Form with your college advisor. Any variation from the program described here must be approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Astronomy.
