XMM-RGS Response Files for Mrk 421

as seen in Williams et al., astro-ph/0601620

The following two ASCII text files contain the model count spectrum (as a function of wavelength) for a simple unabsorbed X-ray power law spectrum with gamma=2, folded through the XMM RGS1 and RGS2 responses built for the coadded Mrk 421 spectrum as described in the above preprint. Note that these files should NOT be used for data analysis! However, they may be helpful for quickly determining the location and severity of detector features that could affect your planned observations. Detector features may change with time and observing configuration; buyer beware...
Columns are (1) bin number, (2) wavelength in Angstroms, (3) XMM-RGS counts/s/Angstrom.
rgs1mod.txt (RGS1)
rgs2mod.txt (RGS2)

If you wish to simulate other types of spectra in Sherpa or xspec, you may find the following RMFs (used to create the above ASCII files) useful. Again, these were built specifically for the coadded Mrk 421 observations and cannot be used for quantitative data analysis!
mrk421_rgs1.rmf.fits (28 MB FITS file)
mrk421_rgs2.rmf.fits (23 MB FITS file)

These ASCII and FITS files do not include the bad CCD in RGS1 (mentioned here); wavelengths between 10.6-13.8 Angstroms should be considered completely unobservable.
