Departure & At Sea aboard the SVP Star Flyer
(Saturday & Sunday, July 5 & 6)

The main part of our journey was a week sailing through the Aegean on the SVP Star Flyer, a 360-foot 4-masted barkentine sailing ship run by Star Clippers.

The first part of this trip was departure from the port of Piraeus on Saturday evening (July 5), and then all day at sea Sunday (July 6), bound for the Greek island of Rhodes in the Dodecanese.

After the heat and smog of Athens, getting to sea was remarkably refreshing.

Departure from Piraeus (July 5)

We boarded the SVP Star Flyer in Piraeus shortly after 6pm, after one of the hotter metro and taxi rides we've had in a long time. After passing through the ticketing area, we were greeted on board with a cool drink and welcome shade, then dinner.

We set sail from Pireaeus at 10pm under a clear sky, and headed out under sail power into the Argo Saronic gulf towards the open Aegean.

Sailing through the Cyclades (July 6)

Sunday was spent at sea, sailing through the Cyclades towards the island of Rhodes. A windy, leisurely day spent watching islands roll by and getting used to life onboard the Star Flyer.
