A Planet's Rocky Road to Success

George Rieke

With the Spitzer telescope, we have been able to detect debris analogous to the zodiacal cloud and Kuiper Belt in literally hundreds of nearby planetary systems. Studies of this debris are giving unprecedented insights to the development of terrestrial planets during the critical periods in the life of the earth: 1.) the impact that formed the moon; 2.) the Late Heavy Bombardment that terminated planet building; and 3.) setting the stage for the emergence of life. We see similar patterns emerging around other stars and can use them to test theories of how the solar system evolved.
