The Tangled Past of Andromeda and Triangulum

According to the tenets of hierarchical structure formation, galaxies
grow by accreting smaller systems, a process beautifully captured in
the Pan-Andromeda Archeological Survey (PAndAS). I will describe the
latest results from PAndAS including newly discovered faint extensions
of the stellar disk of M33. Our working hypothesis is that these
features were created during a recent tidal interaction between M31
and M33. The hypothesis is explored through a series of N-body
simulations. I will discuss our method for generating the
initial conditions used in the M31-M33 experiments as well as other
projects in the field of galactic dynamics.
