Salman Habib's draft schedule and notes based on our last
telecon discussion are
here.
Also, see earlier emails about an
EPO session
and about
white papers
to get a head start on the post-2008 discussion.
- Technical references/acknowledgment on short papers.
- Smoothly integrating science activities of new and old partners.
See
here.
I would like to defer this discussion to the new year, since it is
a broad topic that we want to have sufficient time to address well.
1/25/06 telecon:
- More plans for Santa Fe. See minutes above.
- Smoothly integrating science activities of new and old partners.
See
here.
As a major part of this discussion, I'd like to discuss how we make
the
projects page
more used and more useful.
2/8/06 telecon:
- 2SLAQ LRG evolution paper. Any issues we need to settle?
See
here.
- Update on speaker list for Santa Fe.
- Reminder: Encourage your colleagues to think about post-2008
plans and submit white papers if they wish to do so. See
here.
- Reminder: Encourage your
colleagues to submit plots for sdss.org.
See
here.
- Smoothly integrating science activities of new and old partners.
See
here.
As a major part of this discussion, I'd like to discuss how we make
the
projects page
more used and more useful.
We will hold off on discussion of Pat McDonald's continuing
external collaborator
request
to allow time for any other input from the collaboration.
3/1/06 telecon:
- The current, near-final draft of the Santa Fe schedule is
here.
We'll start with a discussion of the supernova session, see
here
for Josh's notes.
- From the email votes, it looks like we are near consensus on approving
the following external collaborator requests, but we will bring them
up for any final discussion:
- I have collected the white papers that have been submitted for
post-2008 SDSS plans
here.
We should discuss how the 2-hour session on SDSS futures at the
Santa Fe meeting should be organized, plus any more general comments
people have at this stage on post-2008 planning.
- Any other items related to Santa Fe?
- Time permitting, let's return to our discussion of project posting
and communication, summarized in the
minutes
of the last meeting. Which of these ideas would we like to implement,
and are there ideas to be added to the list?
3/15/06 telecon:
- EC request by Heather Morrison. See
here
and
here.
4/12/06 telecon:
- EC request by Connie Rockosi et al. for James Clem, see
here.
We will discuss any issues related to this but will hold a vote
until it has been posted for two weeks, in case there is
further input from the collaboration.
- Dan Zucker's request for expedited consideration of Paper 634, see
here.
- Proposed guideline on sensitive data in publication index, see
here..
- Proposed policy on updating of references on publication index, see
here..
5/3/06 telecon
- EC request from Heidi Newberg et al. on behalf of Bruce Carney,
John Laird, John Morse, and David Delgado, see
here.
We will discuss any issues related to this but will hold a vote
until it has been posted for two weeks, in case there is
further input from the collaboration.
- Heather Morrison's request to be allowed to work with
Case Western undergraduates on the K-giant projects for which
she is an external collaborator.
- Peregrine McGehee's request to give access to the
run 4874 imaging and photo outputs to Colin Aspin for work
on V1647 Orionis, see
here.
- Should require acceptance to the journal for press releases
tied to journal articles? We'll have an initial discussion of this
issue, with follow-up sometime when Don Schneider can join.
6/21/06 Telecon
- Brief report from the AAS Calgary meeting.
- Publication policy for ASEPS, see
here.
- Should there be a special category of publications for
investigations carried out with non-public data that in the end
use only public data, specifically with regard to the minimal
posting period? See Dan Zucker's message
here.
- External collaborator request for Dufour and Bergeron, see
here.
This hasn't been posted to sdss-general yet, so we won't take a
vote, but we should identify any issues and convey them to
Jill Knapp and co.
- Science topics and speakers for the Seoul collaboration meeting.
If you won't attend the telecon but know of exciting results or
people you think should talk at the meeting, please send your suggestions
by email. Ditto on suggestions for an outside speaker.
I know it is difficult for our Asian CoCo reps to make telecons
at this time, but I STRONGLY encourage you to suggest speakers
and topics by email.
7/12/06 telecon
- Continuing external collaborator request from Masamune Oguri,
who is moving from a Princeton postdoc to KIPAC (Stanford/SLAC),
for work on gravitationally lensed quasars and giant arcs.
See
here.
- External collaborator request for Malik Magdon-Ismail of RPI,
submitted by Heidi Newberg and Brian Yanny, for work on detecting
substructure in the stellar spheroid. See
here.
This has only been on sdss-general for a week, so we won't take a
vote, but we should identify any issues and convey them to
Heidi and Brian.
- Speakers for Seoul meeting. See
here.
- What do we do about technical references for journals that
severely restrict the total number of references? The particular
case in question at the moment involves Nature.
- Briefly revisit this item from last time:
Should there be a special category of publications for
investigations carried out with non-public data that in the end
use only public data, specifically with regard to the minimal
posting period? See Dan Zucker's message
here.
There seems to be a fairly widespread feeling that we should
just treat these cases as papers based on public data, perhaps
with some encouragement to invite widespread participation.
If people agree with this, then I'll write some words and
we can put it to a formal vote.
8/30/06 telecon
- Program for Korea meeting. See
here.
- External collaborator request from Holland Ford for Leslie Hebb and
Larry Petro, on planetary transit searches. See
here.
- External collaborator request from Cheng Li for Xi Kang
on comparisons of galaxy clustering to semi-analytic models.
here.
10/20/06 telecon
- External collaborator request from Renyue Cen for Kentaro Nagamine,
see
here.
I think this is straightforward and we are pretty much ready to vote.
- Brief status update on post-2008 planning.
- Plans for the Seattle AAS meeting. Should we have a half-day
SDSS get-together the day before the AAS starts (i.e., on
Saturday, Jan 6)?
- Location of the next collaboration meeting.
11/3/06 telecon
- Location of spring collaboration meeting. It looks like Drexel
has the rooms it needs to host the meeting, and Fermilab has
gracefully conceded the spot, so I think we just need to ratify
Drexel as the location.
- Location of fall collaboration meeting. Fermilab could host
this, but we should see if any European institutions are interested.
- AAS Seattle meeting. I'll update you on current thoughts about
press releases, the SDSS booth, presentations on data access.
- Post-2008 plans. By the end of Friday, I expect to send you
the report of the committee that evaluated the proposals for
post-2008 uses of the SDSS facilities. I'll give an overview
of the report at the telecon.
12/1/06 telecon
- External collaborator request by Xiaohui Fan for
Emma Ryan-Weber and Max Pettini, see
here.
- External collaborator request by Matthias Schreiber for
Boris Gaensicke, see
here.
Since neither of these has been up for two weeks yet, we won't
vote, but we'll discuss any issues related to them.
- External speaker for Drexel collaboration meeting. We should
come up with a list that we can vote on in a few days.
Drexel has interest in an LSST speaker, for which Tony Tyson
is an obvious choice but there are many alternatives.
An idea that we considered but didn't pursue for Santa Fe
was someone on Galactic structure, perhaps James Binney or
James Bullock or Kathryn Johnston. Another possibility is
a large scale structure person from 2dF, such as John Peacock
or Shaun Cole. If you can't attend the telecon but have
sugggestions, please send them by email.
- Last call for institutions interested in hosting the
fall collaboration meeting! Fermilab has volunteered and
is the default; so far I haven't heard interest from others.
Cambridge? MPA?
- Brief update on the status of post-2008 planning.
12/13/06 telecon
- We'll briefly review the external collaborator requests from
the last telecon to see if there are any remaining issues,
and will vote on approval.
See
here for Ryan-Webber/Pettini and
here for Gaensicke.
- We'll discuss the recently posted proposal by Albert Stebbins
for Proty Wu. Thanks to those who have already sent comments.
It seems clear that we will at the very least want to send
this back for greater clarification. See
here.
- We'll also have an initial discussion of the recently posted
proposal by Eric Bell for Sanjib Sharma, James Bullock, and
Kathryn Johnston, see
here.
- We'll try to settle on a ranked list of choices for the
external speaker for the Drexel collaboration meeting.
- I have had rather limited response so far on people
wanting to talk at the pre-AAS mini-meeting. I don't know that
there is much for CoCo to do here, but I welcome any input.
2/14/07 telecon
- External collaborator request by Bob Nichol for a substantial number
of ESO scientists participating in SDSS-II supernova spectroscopic
follow-up, see
here. This is a complex request; please try to read it before
the telecon. We'll hear from Bob and have some discussion but not
vote, as I think we will want to solicit feedback from members of
the supernova team.
- Vote on the
proposal by Eric Bell for Sanjib Sharma, James Bullock, and
Kathryn Johnston, see
here. We discussed this previously, and I think we are now
ready to vote. If you aren't attending the phonecon and want
to register an opinion, send e-mail.
- Daniel's proposed invitation of interested AS2 members
to attend part/all of the Drexel collaboration meeting. See
here. We should also discuss how much time in the
Drexel meeting to devote to AS2, and when to do it.
- Speaker list for Drexel. I'll send e-mail with all the
suggestions I have received so far. We'll have some discussion
of pros and cons, put in any additional suggestions, and then
I'll send around a list for you to rank your choices.
Last chance to get in suggestions. See
here.
5/2/07 telecon
- External collaborator request by Bob Nichol for ESO scientists
participating in SDSS-II supernova spectroscopic
follow-up, see
here. We discussed this extensively at our previous telecon
but didn't take a vote because we wanted Bob to post the projects
and to give time for any additional feedback. The tenor of
the previous discussion was positive (see minutes) and there have
been no objections, so I have been taking this as essentially
approved, but we should allow for any final comments and take a vote.
- External collaborator request by Connie Rockosi, for David Lai
and Mike Bolte, for Keck/ESI studies of low metallicity candidate
stars from SEGUE. See
here. Tim Beers sent a (short) e-mail endorsement of this propsal
on March 5, saying that the magnitude range is out of reach of the
other telescopes currently being used for high-res follow-up.
- External collaborator request by Michael Strauss et al.,
for Robert Becker and Rick White, for Keck follow-up observations
of gravitational lens candidates. See
here.
- External collaborator request by Tim Beers for
Anna Frebel, Chris Sneden, Matthew Shetrone, Volker Bromm,
and Jay Rhee, for follow-up of SEGUE stars with
HET. See
here.
- External collaborator request by Siegfried Roeser et al., for
Nina Kharchenko and Anatoly Piskunov, for work related to
SEGUE Open Cluster Survey. See
here.
8/10/07 telecon
- EC request by Don Schneider for Ohad Shemmer,
for Chandra analysis of weak-lined quasars,
see
here.
- EC request by Douglas Tucker for Ernst Pauzen
and Martin Netopil,
for work on SOCS,
here.
- External collaborator request by Siegfried Roeser et al., for
Nina Kharchenko and Anatoly Piskunov, for work related to
SEGUE Open Cluster Survey. See
here. We discussed this at our last telecon and asked
Roeser for additional information about the collaborators, which is
here.
- Somewhat chaotic request by Don York for EC status for
Peletier, van Woerden, and Schwartz for co-authorship on high
velocity cloud paper, see
here
and
here
here.
