Selected Readings in Universe

The textbook for this course is Universe (7th edition) by Roger A. Freedman and William J. Kauffmann III. Readings to accompany the course lectures are assigned by Units below, but see the individual lectures for specific readings.

Readings:

Course Introduction
Chapter 5, Chapter 4 section 4-7

Unit 1: Observed Properties of Stars
Chapter 19

Unit 2: Stellar Structure & Evolution

The book's treatment of Stellar Structure & Evolution is spread across Chapters 20-24. I am adopting a different path through this fascinating topic than the book's. See the individual lectures for specific readings (expect to be reading specific sections, or skipping the book altogether for some lectures).

Unit 3: Endpoints of Stellar Evolution
Chapter 22 sections 6-8, parts of Chapters 23 & 24

Unit 4: The Milky Way & the Galaxies
Chapters 25, 26, parts of Chapter 27

Unit 5: The Evolving Universe
Chapter 24, sections 1 & 2, Chapter 28, parts of Chapter 29

Unit 6: Frontiers of Modern Astronomy
None, but browse Chapter 30. Some interesting web articles may be assigned if I come across any I like.
